Striper Fishing Update

June 21, 2009

Well this past week was slow (to say the least). I had a half day morning charter on Friday, 6/19, that resulted in no fish in the boat. The morning started out cold, raining and windy so we were confined to the river. No live bait to be found so we fished cut herring in several spots. We drifted some of the popular Piscataqua up river rivers "hot spots" and then we anchored and chummed some others with no luck anyplace. A very disappointing and humbling experience!

On Saturday, 6/20, I had another half day, morning, charter. We left the Pepperrell Cove dock at 6:45 AM. The weather turned out to be excellent. Went out to West Sisters buoy and successfully jigged up several large (too large) mackerel and a few small pollack. There was a fairly large ocean swell which made fishing my favorite spots - close to the shoreline rocks a little too dangerous, so we fished for striped bass in the Piscataqua river. We drifted live mackerel across Fort Point, lost one fish (caught a huge sculpin-biggest and ugliest I've ever seen) and then anchored in back of the point and fished live bait with balloons. There was a boat anchored close to us that caught a couple of schoolies but we didn't get a fish (it was around the top of the tide). We then fished the outgoing tide near the nets out in front of Fort Foster and had the same results - no stripers (this spot is usually a sure bet on a falling tide with live and/or cut bait fishing). My friends that were able to fish the shoreline did report excellent results, one fish caught was a 43" beauty. We finally headed in around 1 pm. Another disappointing and humbling experience. Later in the day I did get reports that the bite was on and people were catching schoolies in Spruce Creek and Back Channel.
