Fish Reports Maine and New Hampshire>
Fishing in Southern Maine

August 14, 2009

Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last report and I have had several charters since then. All of my most recent charters have been for striped bass. The results have been mixed. While we have been catching fish, we haven't been catching lots of them, my customers have worked really hard for the fish they've hooked. Of the 6 charters since my last report we have averaged about 3 fish for each four hour charter (we even got skunked the other day). The fish have ranged in size from 26" to 37" (no over 40" fish recently). I know the big ones are out there as one of my friends recently caught a 47" striper right where I normally fish. However, he fished for 3 hours to catch that one (and only) fish on that outing. There are some fish in the creeks and channels and the captains with smaller boats seem to be hitting those fish consistently. I anticipate that come the end of this month the action will begin to pick up as the big stripers start moving south.

I have loaded the boat with Tuna fishing gear and just this week made my first trip out to tuna grounds. We got caught in a hell of a storm that came and went in minutes..."Hot Pursuit" performed just fine and we only lost about an hour of fishing (wishing?) time. Later in the afternoon (2ish) we were about 25 miles offshore and ran into a school of tuna (couldn't tell their exact size as the water was a little choppy and we didn't get to see much of the fish). The birds were working the surface, my fish finder showed plenty of fish but we couldn't buy a hook up. We trolled squid bars, Xraps, Bombers, Sluggos, and I stopped to jig Sluggos and jigs with no success. Once we got close to the Tuna the surface action ceased and the Tuna were suspended from 30' to 200'and just wouldn't come up. We buzzed around them for at least an hour with no success. We'll head back out this week end and try again - I'll keep you posted.

I haven't had a groundfishing charter since mid-June. I miss not fishing out on Jefferies. It's such a wonderful spot with lots of Cod, Haddock, whales, porpoises (and sometimes even Tuna). The reports I'm getting are that the fishing remains good. I am hoping to get some fall charters that will get me back into groundfishing.

The camera is on the boat, but as soon as I bring it in I'll update the website with several new pictures.
